“Nya Nstee”

Nya Nsteeafrican-map.jpg

DC Fashion Week, on the 29th of FEB. 2008 hosted HU {Howard University} ASA - Fashion Show “Nya Nstee” - Meaning ‘The Return”. It was based on the return of an African girl who spends an entire evening taking you on an exciting adventure back to the “REAL AFRICA”. . .exploring the motherland, seeing cutting-edge fashion from its different shores and music from the hinterland. “Together we’ll return to the lengths and breadths of the cradle of civilization.”Some of the shows proceeds went to “Nothing But Nets” - a campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa. For only $10 you can send a net and save a life!. . . and some of these designers came out to help (Alphabetical Order) . . .

Ariel Simone

ariel-simone.jpg

Ariel Simone brought to the fore our Summer blues, whilst showing off her new swimwear collection that was bursting with summer colours .I.E. the yellows, blues & Pink, and loads of sequins. These itsy - bitsy suits would make you feel the sexiest at the beach!

Corjor

corjor.jpg

Corjor’s entrance was quite extravagant - a large piece of glass with his logo carved in carried by two buff men was brought out at the start of his showing- but in line with his collection. Corjor is the Originator of DC Fashion Week, and his collection proved his growth in the business with very elegant evening gowns, and a touch of fur. He was the strongest of the evening.

Dav!d

davd.jpg

Dav!d is a new label by Eniola Hundeyin, who resides in canada. I loved the complexity of her designs, juxtaposing materials like ‘Damask’ with sequins. They looked very futuristic, yet so wearable!

Estella Couture

estella-couture.jpg

I love it when I see certain designers come of age. Estella of Estella Couture kept it fun and flowing for this show, with bright colours, like Red, Orange and still kept it subtle enough for your 30s ladies to wear youthfully.

IDIA

idia.jpg

Ifueko of Idia is the creator of HU ASA Fashion Show, and has shown every year since it commenced. Idia mostly caters to the plus size ladies, but did a 360 with this collection by making most of her clothes for the smaller gals. Her past collections have been really ‘grown up’ in her own words, and this time she just wanted to make it fun, because big girls like to be sexy and have fun too. You can watch an Interview with Ifueko @ DC Fashion Week on HauTe TV on FashionAfrica.com or Click HERE

Knaf Couture

Kayda Nana Afriyie Frimpong of KNAF COUTURE a fashion label from Ghana, West Africa. They are custom-made and original clothes that are designed to accentuate the female figure.

L ~ Shandi

l-shandi.jpg

L~Shandi was created from a Nigerian street slang “Lepa Shandi” (Skinny thing). Lepa Shandi is the term for women whose clothing, outfit, or ensemble has a flattering and sexy fit. This Label’s forte is using the traditional lace, and making it as western as possible. It was fun to see what they could do with Lace - the bows, and frills were neat.

Obsidian

obsidian.jpg

Obsidian is a label by Isoken Ogiemwonyi, who currently schools and resides in the UK. Her clothes were flown in, and her show was worth every mile they covered.

Simply For You

simply-for-you-jewelry.jpg

Simply For You is a jewelry company created by Lola Rotimi. They specialize in beads of African Heritage and tones. To see more from Simply For you, watch HauTe TV or Click HERE

The show was a blast of energy and culture, and of course you can catch most of it on HauTe TV.

It was great to see so many designers I hadn’t even heard of at the HU show . . . . . . . . and thanks for the constant enlightenment on fashionafrica.com . . . . keep up the good work!

  3. Doreen Says:

    The show was really fun!
All the designers did a great job! Loved it!

  4. Joan Says:

    Awesome! I love it!

  5. Ikechukwu Says:

The show was fabulous!!! These pictures really illustrate the details of the clothes and feel of the collections featured in the show. Each collection truly added a scenic backdrop to the whole theme of “the return to the motherland” and it made me proud of the direction African fashion is headed towards. I can only wait to for the next years to come…

However, Estella, DAV!D and Knaf Couture really did it for me on the night. Estella’s pieces evoked a very wearable, cosmopolitan vibe that did not seem too carry the ostentatious tag often associated with African fashion. I have a few backstage pictures of the clothes and they exuded a very fun, youthful side of African couture.

DAV!D achieved this also through their wonderful mix of fabrics! The critique on the futuristic feel of her clothes is very well captured on the photo you featured. That garment would have won the Project Runway challenge that required the contestants to project what fashion would resemble in decades to come. The gown also has a hint of oriental flair to it. Overall, a very progressive collection that really showed DAV!D’s versatility as a design house.

  6. Babe Says:

I second Ikechukwu’s critique however, David was the best!

  7. Temitope A. Says:

The show was awesome!! I enjoyed that they also had full- figure models to showcase all the fabulous designs for a curvy beautiful figure! The size sexy ladies were hott can we see some pics of them too?

  8. Jbabs Says:
