Alek Wek swims “Against Malaria”.

alek-wek-in-speedo-she-will-use-to-swim-against-malaria.jpg

April 5th marks World Swim Day, and The Against Malaria Group have come up with an easy way to raise money to fund their cause; buying inexpensive insecticidal nets and installing them over the beds of people in malaria-prone areas to repel the mosquitoes that spread the disease.

This cause hits close to home for Sudanese Supermodel – Alek Wek who is an avid supporter of this group and is sending out press releases to help raise awareness and funds for “Against Malaria”

How it works:

Each swimmer gets donations or pledges from friends, family, and strangers for each lap or time increment, and after their swim they collect the money for Against Malaria. “I mean, do it in a pool, the ocean, or your bathtub. People hold fancy dress swims, group swims, naked swims. It doesn’t matter how you do it, as long as you’re involved,” says Rob Mather who runs Against Malaria”. “If you can raise $1,250, I’ll net a whole bloody village just for you.”

It’s really easy, and something you can enjoy while helping a great cause; gather your friends and family for a fun time in the pool. Please remember Children in Africa die of Malaria every 30 SECONDS. Imagine how many children would have passed while you are swimming, and also how many children you could possibly save!

A nice cause that I “may” do. Actually, I probably will! Just overcame a nasty eye reaction to chlorine after my swimming class :( Maybe I’ll take the cause to the beach because me and swimming pools are not the best of friends right now!

Their foundation sounds similar to Nothing But Nets, however I’m really drawn to how they’ve attached a physical activity to the whole effort. Exercise is a great way to combat all the cardiovascular health issues that are plaguing Blacks this side of the pond so yes, I’ll definitely be up for this and SO SHOULD YOU!!! I know I’m trying to watch my height so this a good excuse to hide that :P
