Afolake Adedayo
Afolake believes that “art is life and life is art”; and says that art is an inherent part of her soul. She loves color as a means of expressing and communicating her feelings, thoughts and ideas. She also mentions that as much as her works have an African orientation to it, her desire to paint is determined by certain unique appeal of a particular subject and the specific emotion evoked at that given time. These different emotions are reflected in her choice and use of color.
She also love to paint themes relating to social strife and facts of African societies and the Western World from teenage pregnancy, homelessness, cultural shock, to alcoholism, suicide etc and how these differ from society to society in terms of the way it is perceived, reacted to and the consequences that comes with it.
Born in Nigeria, Afolake Latifat Adedayo received a B.Sc. in Sociology from the University of Ilorin, Kwara. Nigeria. She is a self-taught painter and has been into art for as long as she can remember. Studying Sociology which worked to her advantage in helping her to understand people, events and happenings, both visually and behaviorally, making her more effective as an artist. She continued her studies in Visual Communications at The Katherine Gibbs School upon her relocation to the United States 1998.
